This is an Iron Vanguard DPS Build that will still allow you to tank end game content. By abandoning the traditional logic that the Swordmaster is best DPS Paragon we replace the Steel Blitz Class Feature with Trample the Fallen and then further improve upon this class feature by choosing the Battle Trample Feat. We make up for our loss of Weapon Master Strike by Improving our Cleave with the Cruel Cut Style Feat and then empowering it with our artifact weapon ability.  I don’t want to assert that this build is any more or less effective than any other builds. It should be considered instead, as a viable alternative to the plethora of Sword Master builds that have been recommended. Although this build is aimed primarily at DPS I have personally tanked CN and FBI without issue using this build and have recently successfully tanked the Dragon Turtle in FBI with no Healer.

Ability Scores

Ability Scores offer a flat increase to various stats. Each ability score effects different stats depending on your character. Additionally you will only receive a bonus once an ability score increases past 10. For example. If you have 12 strength you will receive a 2% bonus to damage, and not 12%.

Strength – 1% Damage Increase, 1% Guard Meter Total, 1% Damage over Time (DOT) Resistance

Dexterity – 1% Resistance Ignored, 1% Area of Effect (AOE) resist, 0.5% deflect chance.

Constitution – 4% Max Hit Points, 1% Action Point (AP) Gain

Wisdom – 1% Control Bonus, 1% Control Resistance

Intelligence – 1% Recharge Speed

Charisma – 1% Combat Advantage Damage, 1% Companion Influence

For This Build:

A pure DPS build should choose Strength and either Charisma or Dexterity and a Pure Tank Build should Choose Dexterity and Constitution. I focused my points on Strength and Constitution. The Raw Damage, Guard Meter, Max Hitpoints and Action Point gain all work together to create a versatile, high damaging and tough character with enough Hit Points to still keep me competitive when tanking Orcus and FBI.

My Scores:

16 Strength
12 Dex
16 (18) Con (+2 Human)
10 Wisdom
10 Intelligence
10 Charisma

Race Selection

Human
  • +2 to any Ability Score
  • Versatile Defense: Increase your Defense by 3%.
  • Heroic Effort: You gain an additional Heroic Feat point at levels 10, 15, and 20.

Humans are a great race for just about any class, and they are my choice for Guardian Fighter. The bonus defense is gold, and the extra 3 feats give you great feat versatility. The +2 stat should go into either strength or constitution. I personally chose constitution.

Half Orc
  • +2 Dexterity
  • +2 Constitution or +2 Strength
  • Furious Assault: Your Critical Severity is 5% higher than that of other races
  • Swift Charge: You gain a 10% bonus to run speed for 3 seconds when you enter combat. This effect can only occur once every 20 seconds.

Half-Orcs are another great choice that offers both Offense and Defensive choices. Furious Assault further increases the damage of your critical strikes and Swift Charge can help with positioning and getting those first few hits to build agro. +2 Dexterity is a good defensive stat and your choice of Strength of Constitution fit right with the build. Choose Strength for more damage or Constitution for more hit points.

Halfling
  • +2 Dexterity
  • +2 Charisma or +2 Constitution
  • Nimble Reaction: Your small stature and quick movements grant 3% chance to deflect incoming attacks.
  • Bold: Your fearless nature increases your resistance to Crowd Control effects by 10%

Halfings are great for a more defensive oriented build. Dexterity offers deflection chance that stacks with Nimble Reaction, and the control resistance will keep you fighting and maintaining agro while others may have been rooted or stunned. Choose Charisma for more Damage or Constitution for more hit points.

Dwarf
  • +2 Constitution
  • +2 Strength or +2 Wisdom
  • Stand Your Ground: You have 20% increased resistance to Knock and Repel effects
  • Cast Iron Stomach: You have 10%  increased damage resistance to Damage over Time(DoT) effects

Dwarves are a solid pick. Although their bonuses are a little boring Stand Your Ground is useful. Their stats are amazing for this build with innate Constitution bonus and I would choose Strength over Wisdom.

Dragonborn Available from the Zen Market
  • Ability Scores: Grants you +2 to any two stats.
  • Dragonborn Fury: Your Power and Critical Strike are increased by 3%.
  • Draconic Heritage: You receive 5% more healing from all spells and abilities.

A powerhouse choice, if a little expensive (and ugly) I would Pick +2 Strength and Constitution, Dragonborn Fury is amazing for DPS and your Draconic Heritage will help your cleric keep you alive.

Metallic Dragonborn Available from the Glorious Resurgence Lockbox and Dragonforged Lockbox(PC and Xbox only)
  • Ability Scores: Grants you +2 to any two stats.
  • Dragonborn Fury: Your Power and Critical Strike are increased by 3%.
  • Metallic Ancestry: You receive 3% more healing from all spells and abilities. Your Hit Points are increased by 3%
Same as the Drargonborn but with 3% more base HP. I’d choose this option over the regular Dragonborn if available.

Feats

I chose the Iron Vanguard, over sword master, and personally feel it is the superior DPS choice.

DPS

Although both builds are fairly similar in focusing on Conqueror path, a more DPS oriented build explores the tactician tree further, Adding Crushing Pin and Battle Trample for bonus damage. Battle Trample and Crushing Pin are why I feel Iron Vanguard is the superior DPS choice. Your daily power will be Indomitable Strength, which will proc your crushing Pin regularly. Battle Trample is far more reliable than the Swordmaster’s Counterpart Steel Blitz. Trample the Fallen deals 20% bonus damage to any controlled NPC. Plus the Battle Trample Feat deals 25% additional weapon damage to any controlled NPC, where as Steel Blitz offers only a 5% chance to deal 80% weapon damage. As such Trample the fallen combined with Battle Trample offers a significantly higher damage potential with the combined effect of added hate generation.

Heroic Feats

  • 3/3 Toughness: Increases your maximum Hit Points by 3/6/9%
  • 3/3 Strength Focus: Increase the effectiveness of Strength by 5/10/15%
  • 3/3 Armor Spec: Increase the effectiveness of Armor Class and Defense by 5/10/15%.
  • 1/3 Shielded Resurgence: When affected by a control power regenerate 2/3/4% of your hit points over 10 seconds.
  • 5/5 Powerful Attack: Increase the damage of your Encounter and At will powers by 2/4/6/8/10%.
  • 3/3 Weapon Mastery: Increased your Critical Chance by 1/2/3%.
  • 2/5 (5/5 if Human) Ubiquitous Shield: Reduce the effects of Combat Advantage against you by 5/10/15/20/25%

Conqueror

  • 5/5Take Measure:  When you are crit, gain Temporary Hit Points equal to 1/2/3/4/5% of your maximum Hit Points.
  • 5/5 Wrathful Warrior: When you have Temporary Hit points, you deal 3/6/9/12/15% more damage.
  • 5/5 Jagged Blades: When you critically strike a foe they begin bleeding. This bleed lasts 10 Seconds and deals 150%/300%/450%/600%750% of your weapon damage over it’s Duration.
  • 5/5 Cruel Cut Style: Cleave now deals 3/6/9/12/15% more damage.
  • 5/5 Tactical superiority: Deal 1/2/3/4/5% more damage and Combat Superiority Grants an Additional 1/2/3/4/5% Damage.
  • 1/1 Reckless Attacker: When struck in combat you gain Reckless Attacker. Reckless Attacker increases your damage by 5% and Critical chance by 2%. Reckless Attacker lasts 10 seconds and stacks up to 5 times.

Tactician

  • 5/5 Fight On: Encounter Cooldowns Reduced by 2/4/6/8/20%.
  • 5/5 Crushing Pin: Your Control Powers cause the target to take 10% bonus damage for 3 seconds.
  • 5/5 Battle Trample: When your Trample the Fallen would cause you to deal more damage, you deal 25% of your weapon damage as additional damage and threat.

Tank

Although still a DPS build at heart, this option gives you just a little more umph in terms of survivability. I’d recommend this build for lesser geared players still struggling to tank CN and other Epic Dungeons. However once sufficiently geared you should be able to switch to the DPS variation without losing your ability to tank effectively.

Heroic Feats

  • 3/3 Toughness: Increases your maximum Hit Points by 3/6/9%.
  • 3/3 Strength Focus: Increase the effectiveness of Strength by 5/10/15%.
  • 2/5 (5/5 if Human) Ubiquitous Shield: Reduce the effects of Combat Advantage against you by 5/10/15/20/25%.

This bleed lasts 10 Seconds and deals 50%/300%/450%/600%750% of your weapon damage over it’s Duration.

Protector

  • 5/5 Plate Agility:  You gain 1/2/3/4/5% chance to deflect attacks.
  • 5/5 Armor of Bahamut: When your guard meter is below 30% take 10% less damage from all sources.
  • 5/5 Shield Defense: You gain 1/2/3/4/5 to AC.

Powers

Your powers are going to be fluid. You should be willing to change them frequently and often depending on the situation. As to what powers should you put to rank 4 first. I would Recommend Into the Fray, Enforced Threat, followed by your At Wills. Then to other Encounter Powers such as Commander Strike, Knight’s Valor and Anvil of Doom. Save your Dailies for last.

Paragon Iron Vanguard

At-wills

  • Cleave – Swing through your foes, the third attack deals bonus damage. Also restores 5% stamina.
  • Crushing Surge-Bash your foe with a series of slow, satisfying attacks. The third strike deals additional damage and will Heal you.
It’s about this point everyone will worry about losing out on Weapon Master Strike, however we have increased Cleave’s damage by 15% with our feats. We will further increase the damage with our artifact set by another 8%. So you will not lose out on too much damage here. Furthermore I prefer Cleave over Weapon Master Strike as Weapon Master Strikes animation can’t be cancelled and can prevent you from getting your shield up in a critical moment, where cleaves can be interrupted.

Class Features

Standard
  • Trample the Fallen – When a foe is affected by control powers deal 5/10/15/20% more damage to it.
  • Combat Superiority- When a foe hits you, you deal 5% Additional Damage to them and they deal 5% less damage to you.
Fangbreaker Island
  • Enhanced Mark – Marked targets now build threat while marked, and you generate an additional 75/150/225/300% more threat while striking them.
  • Combat Superiority- When a foe hits you, you deal 5% Additional Damage to them and they deal 5% less damage to you

.

Encounters

DPS Set up (Solo)
  • Lunging Strike
  • Knee Breaker
  • Into the Fray
DPS Set Up (Group)
  • Anvil of Doom
  • Knee Breaker
  • Into the Fray
Tank Set Up
  • Knights Valor
  • Enforced Threat
  • Into the Fray

But Roy, why Knee breaker over Anvil of Doom? Knee breaker counts as a control power. It will proc both the Crushing Pin feat and activate your Trample the fFallen class feature. Because it’s a dot the slow will last for a considerable time giving you plenty of extra bonus damage.

Dailies

  • Fighters Recovery-You steady yourself and gain vigor for the fight to come by temporarily Healing for a large portion of the damage you deal.
  • Villains Menace-With valiant fury you smash the ground, damaging foes around you. In your temporary fervor, you deal increased damage and gain immunity to disabling effects.
  • Indomitable Strength: Pummel your target with a fury of blows knocking them away and leaving them prone.

Fighter’s Recovery should never leave your bar. This daily is amazing. I can tank CN without a healer running this feat. And have just recently tanked the Dragon Turtle in FBI without a healer. For your second option I like to run Villains Menace for Trash Pulls and Mob clearing and switch to Indomitable Strength for single target encounters.

.

Stronghold

The Stronghold boon will be dictated by which boons your guild has unlocked. However I prefer the Power and Defense boons.

Gear

I will list the gear that I utilize but I think it’s more important to list the stat priority as not everyone can get all the gear at once.

As a general rule I prioritized Defense, Crit, Power, Deflect Recovery. If at all possible I avoided Armor Pen as I get 4k from my mount and the rest from my companion. For my own personal preference I tried to stack as much defense on my character without relying on my pets bonding stones. If I took hits before my pet entered combat I wanted to live, if I my pet died or was not summoned I still wanted to be tanky. As such your first order business is to get 80% damage resistance on your character. After that stack deflect and crit on your companion.

Weapons:

Twisted Weapon Set

For artifact features I run the improved Combat Superiority Relic Feature and +400 AoE Resist on the off hand.
And I run the and I run Improved Cleave on the Main Hand.

Armor:

Elemental Dragon Flight Head
Elemental Dragon Flgiht Chest
Elemental Dragon Flight Boots
Elemental Drow Craft Gloves

In FBI I run Full Shieldbearer set empowered to Tier 3. The extra HP and Everfrost Resistance makes surviving much easier.

Necklace & Belt

Baphomet Infernal Talisman

Demogorgon’s Girdle of Might

Rings:

Ring of Dod x2

Artifacts:

Shard Wand of Orcus – 1000 Power, 1000 Movement 20% Damage Bonus
Heart of Red Dragon – 1000 Power 1000 Defense
Sigil of the Devoted Cleric – 1000 Power 1000 Defense (This is currently my active artifact)
Symbol of Fire – 1000 Power 1000 Defense

Companion Equipment: (offense)

Ring of Precision
Ring of Dod x2

Companion Equipment: (defense)

Ring of Sudden Deflect
Ring of Stein x2

If you cannot obtain the Orcus set the Lost Mouth set will work for DPS or the Upcoming Valhalla set in 10.5 will be great for tanking. You can also mix and match pieces such as the Greater Belt of Constitution, Lathander Necklace and Another Artifact such as the Guardian Sigil, Horn of Valhalla or Oghma’s Token.

Enchantments

I don’t think I need to say you want rank 12 Enchantments. Obviously use the best rank you can afford/obtain and work on gearing up. You should also increase your bonding stones to 12 before worrying about ranking up other enchantments.

Weapon

Vorpal – Increases the Crit Severity for all attacks including at wills, encounters and dailies. Use the highest rank you can afford to deal the most damage possible.

Fey – When you hit a foe with an encounter power you debuff the target so they deal 18% less damage you deal 18% more damage. Great option for both tanking and dealing damage. I would not recommend a Fey enchant unless you can get Transcendent.

Lightning Enchant – Proc a chain lightning hitting multiple mobs. Each time your proc you lower your active cool downs. Less damage than the other two, but will help with threat generation and getting your encounters back faster.

Armor

Soul Forge – Upon death you are automatically revived. No need to level past lesser. My preferred choice.

Negation – Stack damage resistance upon hit. Not particularly useful after you reach the 80% damage resistance cap

Shadowclad – Stack Deflect Chance each time you’re hit. A solid alternative.

Offense

Azures: + Critical – Crit will always deal more damage per point than power until you reach 100% crit. I would recommend you always use azures until your crit is capped.

Radiant: +Power –  Only if your crit is capped.

Defense

Azures: + Defense -You want to stack defense until your Damage Reduction reaches 80%

Silvery: + Deflect – After defense is capped switch focus to Deflect

Utility Only
  • Fey Blessing: You have a % chance after killing a foe to spawn a will o’ the wisp to find an enchantment for you.
  • Dragon hoard: You have a % Chance after killing a foe to find a Refining Stone at your feet.
  • Quartermaster’s: You have a % chance after killing a foe to find a bag of goods, Higher ranks improve the quality of the Bag.
  • Dark Enchant: Increased Run Speed – Switch to these once all your refinement has been completed.
Overload Slots
  • Greater Corrupt Black Ice Enchantment: when dealing damage you have a chance to empower yourself with corrupt black ice, granting 800 power for 8 seconds, Additionally you Generate 1.25% of your AP each seconds while affected by this buff.
  • Greater Corrupt Lethal Enchantment:  when dealing damage you have a chance to empower yourself with corrupt black ice, granting 800 Critical Strike for 8 seconds, Additionally you Generate 1.25% of your AP each seconds while affected by this buff.

Companions

I currently use a Will-o’-wisp as my Active companion. But really a Fire Archon, Con Artist, Lillend will all serve you well. When I go into FBI I switch his offensive rings to defensive rings for added survivability. I also switch my other pets for more tank oriented active bonuses. This can be tedious but will pay dividends when tanking in top tier content. You’ll want to use the highest rank bonding stones you can obtain. Rank your bonding stones up before worrying about increasing other enchants. Once you obtain bonding stones rank 8 or higher you’ll no longer want to use Augment pets as the bondings will net you a higher total stat value on an active companion.

Offensive Companions
  • Fire Archon Active Bonus: Increases your damage against targets below 50% health by 7%. Each additional active Archon increases this bonus by .5%,
  • Air Archon increases your damage against targets not at full health by +2/3/5.% Each additional active Archon increases this bonus by .5%
  • Siegemaster – Increases damage by 4%. 8% if in your stronghold
  • Eriynes of Belial – Increases crit severity by 10%
  • Will-o’-wisp – 3 Rings, 2x offense 1 times defense (switch rings when DPSing)
Defensive Companions
  • Rust Monster – When struck by a foe there is a 25% chance to reduce their damage by 5%. Stacks 3 times.
  • Chicken – When hit for 25% of your hp, debuff the target with -10% Damage debuff.
  • Leprechaun – 10% AoE Resist
  • Energon – Increases your max hit points by 5%
  • Will-o’-wisp – 3 Rings, 2x offense 1 times defense (switch rings when tanking)

 Mounts

  • Axe Beak (Legacy) – The 4k armor pen is essential for this build as I do not gain armor pen anywhere else. besides my companions base stats. These two alone are sufficient to push you over the 60% resistance ignored bench mark.
Current insignia’s are
  • Gladiator’s Guile-When your Stamina is above 75%, you move 15% faster. When your Stamina is below 25%, you gain 15% of your Power as Stamina Gain
  • Victim’s Preservation Whenever you take greater than 35% of your maximum Hit Points in pre-mitigated damage in asingle blow you are healed for 10% of your max hit points over 5 seconds(This effect can occur every 10 seconds)
  • Barbarians Revelry – Whenever you perform a crit strike, you will heal yourself for 2% of your maximum hit points.
  • Survivors Blessing – Whenever you Deflect an attack, you are healed for 3% of your maximum Hit Points over 4 seconds.
  • Magistrates Patience – Whenever you perform a Critical Strike, your target will gain a stack of Magistrate’s Consideration. Enemies affected by Magistrate’s Consideration take Psychic Damage equal to 10% of your Power over 4 seconds. Allies affected by Magistrate’s Consideration are healed for 3% of your maximum Hit Points over 4 seconds

This is one very well thought out and extremely well written guide. I have been playing a Tactian Tank for a while now but at times I would like to play something with more DPS. I will be giving this build a try. Again, well written guide.

Nice guide from what gear score should i tey this out am pure tank right now 2,5k score . And this build can tank orcus? Cause even with my 2,5 pure tank i have problems with him 🙁

Tanking Orcus really comes down to knowing when you can put down your shield and when to leave it up. This build can tank orcus but it doesnt leave much room for mistakes. When you tank orcus be sure to approach Orcus with your shield up. Mark him and start poking at Orcus to build threat. Immediately after orcus hits you drop your shield and activate a power and put your shield up. You’ll want to make sure to use enforce threat as that restores a portion of your guard meter so you can keep your shield up longer, you may also want to run shield talent for additional guard meter instead of another class feature. Finally make sure to use Fighters recovery when ever it is up (be sure to time activating it with his swings though) when his phase change occurs back away from orcus if it’s the balls and move back in when they disappear.

Thanks i have another question? Am sitting at 40dmg reduction. But je hits me twice and am down, my question is, is it because of my positioning or i need more dmg reduction? I dnt understand why he hits me with my shield am down.

Definitely need to get your Damage Reduction up. The most important stat you have as a tank is your Dame Reduction. You need to get it as close to 80% (or over) as you can. Second is your hit points. Definitely need to get over 100k. Try getting Dusk Armor from the trade bar merchant or Dragon Flight if you’re in a guild that runs dragons. If you’re in a guild make sure you have your defense boon turned on.

which dragon flight peices do you get raid or ward and is it the same for shieldbearer?

I use the Raid sets for both Dragon Flight and Shield Bearer from FBI. The Ward sets offer a strange assortment of stats that do not appeal to me.

Hey dude how do you get to 30k defense?

    • Profile photo of Roy
      January 19, 2017 at 7:13 pm

A couple of items. I made sure to always prioritize my defense. So my artifacts all give Defense, (except orcus shard) My Defense slots are all Azures, my Armor is reinforced with Defense Kits, My insignias are all defense if it was an option. When choosing boons I always chose defense over other offensive options. I use an axe beak but you could also choose to use a +defense mount bonus as well. Also make sure you’re in a guild and activate the +defense boon if they have one.

I am playing Dps Tank too. Tanking in full Dps-Gear and it works very easy in fbi without switching to any Def-Equipment.
Playing swordmaster with weapon master strike or crushing surge

My unbuffed Stats when I am standing alone in the PE:
    – 31k power

    – stable 50k power with proc 54k with my bruta and 66k with companion bruta
    – stable 30k crit (84%)

    – stable 23k def

Mostly I am the only GF in my Group and my skills are

    – Boss fight
    – into fray, commander strike, knight challance or kneebreaker (while tanking)

with second GF in Boss fight (not tanking)
    – anvil of doom, kneebreaker, knight challance

My question is why u don´t use knight challance or commander strike?
Your critical strike on the screen with 35k is with Ring of Precision proc.
So i think you need more crit or am i wrong? (i know u are not over 4000 gs)

      Could u explain why, roy?

Think commander strike is ur best skill for pushing ur group and together with itf we are the only reason for exist.

I do use commanders strike when I am tanking and the team I am with is strong enough to not need my Knights Valor. I give team survivability the priority. However if I am in 4k group just wrecking content I’ll replace KV with Commanders Strike for sure.

I do not use commanders strike when I am filling a dps role though, and that is because commanders strike only works when the target is marked. If I am DPSing I do not want to pull threat from my tank, so I do not mark, thus making commanders strike useless.

Great guide Roy. I have been using your Mod 9 build and was waiting for the 10.5 update. I am now going to respect my GF to this new build. I am currently iL3046 and still new to the GF tactics (was running GWF but switched to GF because all my friends were running dps toons and we did not have a tank in the group). What do you think about the Dread as a weapon enchantment? I recently upgraded to R10. Should i switch?

On another note….I am building a Scourge Warlock iL2706….any suggestions on who/where/how??

      January 30, 2017 at 8:43 pm

Hey man, glad to hear you’re going to give it a try. I don’t recommend a dread enchant, it only affects encounter powers. Also dread has no effect on Fray since it can’t crit. Fray is a power I recommend should never leave your bar meaning it’s only boosting 2 encounter powers. If you’re running Knights Valor thats another encounter that can’t crit. So it’s really not optimal.

Sorry I’ve never played a scourge their lost on me.

First, thank you for this awesome guide, im new in this game and it helped me a lot, more than a lot because english is not my language and I dont understand a lot of things.

I have a question, how the companions and mounts work? I leveled up con artist {Im still lvl 40} but I dont know what runestone need, I guess that in the defense slot I need the one that gives me some of my companion rating, right?

I will keep learning stuff and following your guide, thanks again!

      January 30, 2017 at 8:45 pm

You’ll want bonding stones on your companion, this should be one of your first priorities when gearing up. Bonding stones give you a % of your companions stats when there are in combat. At rank 12 this bonus is 2.85% of the companions total stats. This means your best gear and your highest level enchants should be on your companion because it’s giving you max efficiency on the stat return.

        January 31, 2017 at 2:16 pm

Thanks for the answer Roy! Now I understand it, bonding runestones but only in the summoned companion (Not in the other actives, right?)

Now I’m about to hit lvl 60, I guess the game starts in lvl 70. I’m trying to earn some AD, should I wait until hit 70 to invest it? What I should buy first? (Bonding stones, upgrade con artist, gear for me..) I checked all the companions you list and they are too expensive, so should I buy some rare that fit with my GF untill I do more AD? Same for mounts.. haha thank you in advantage for all, you are helping me a lot!!

          January 31, 2017 at 6:03 pm

Correct, gear and bonding stones on active companions (but not summoned) give no benefit. it;s only your summoned companion that benefits you. Luckily for new players the value of many companions is dropping. many pets that cost millions of ad are down to about 100k. Green and Blue archons should be pretty cheap if you’re looking to boost damage. The real money comes at 70 so don’t worry if you can’t afford much right now.

My best advice is to get into a guild that runs dragons and get dragon flight gear for your primary gear pieces, run demo, edemo,cn and prophecies for high end gear. Sudden Precision, Defense, Deflect, Brutality are all good rings. This should also let you start working towards your twisted weapon set. For your belt and neck the loastmouth set is a good DPS starter set or you can mix and match pieces like a girlde of strength of plated belt of con depending on your needs. Start saving up all your spare enchantments and refinement gear for double refinement weekend and upgrade any artifact pieces then.

Hi again Roy! Finally lvl 70 with an iLvL of 1780, I bought all blues (Defense>hitpoints>Crit>power) and Im with 85k HP and 37% damage reduction. I’ll try tonight kessells retreat, but dont know what to expect.. And I barely know what is the loot from the dungeons that I can afford right now. I will join a guild for the dragon runs too for sure.

I have all enchantments (Both off and deff) azures rank 7, next I will buy 3 bonding runestones and then upgrade con artist to blue.

I have to choose a elemental evil campaign artifact set, drowned set seems the best for use for a while, right?

I will tell later how this builds work for a newbie that just hitted lvl 70 in this first epics or “skirmishes” like kessels for let know others what to expect without being high iLvl

            Greetings!

Hey Yago, grats on 70. Good luck on running your dungeons. Just keep getting your def and hp up, find a good cleric to run with too. You could either choose drowned for the heal, or fire for the AP gain, firing off villains menace as your daily will help keep that extra 25% damage resistance running.

            Hi again Roy!

I’m sitting at 2040 iLvl right now, slowly learning mechanics!

I can run skirmishes with “DPS mode” and in dungeons I switch to “tank oriented mode”

            – DPS: Into the fray, Knee breaker and Anvil of doom with trample the fallen and combat superiority

            – Tanky mode: Into the fray, enforced threat and knights valor, but in bosses I change enforced threat to commanders strike as I see that if the party its low I can maintain the threat easy, and if they are 3k+ they just dont need me in these dungeons.

I have 2 Dusk pieces from the daily key, and the rest alliance gear. Ring of sudden defense +2 and brutality +2. As artifact gear for now im using Greater lavander cloak and belt of constitution for more survivality, but Im planning switch to lostmauth/orcus when I can afford it.

Now about con artist, he is always dying and im doubting about using him as summoned. If I upgrade his debuff is great, but maybe fire archon procs more the bondings and as ranged dont die too much? Or air archon? Oh and people say that artist will be nerfed some day!

I have 650k AD, first im going to buy the bondings so for now Im not upgrading any companion, im planning to buy x3 R8 bondings but not upgrading, just use them for now and when I can buy R10 that doesnt need other bonding to upgrade, then sell the R8s, its ok or there is another better method?

To sum up, as new player with 2k iLvl with this guide but without full build I can tank dungeons (Nice in MC, VT, ETOS, and badly Lostmauth) and run DPS in skirmishes. (As tank if the party is 2k-2,5k ilvl Im always 2º or 3º on damage dealt)

The Dungeons at first I was one-shooted a lot, but learning the attacks of bosses Im able to avoid almost all damage and positioning better survive more or less easily. So dont give up.

If there is around here any GF noob as me in PC add me to share thoughts! /Who Monosabius

Absolutely. The Guardian Fighter Sigil is a solid pick defense, deflection and Free. if you want to do more damage something like the Sigil of the controller for power and critical. I liked keeping most of my defense on my character so I never go caught with low damage reduction incase my companion died or didn’t proc bonding stones first. But use your best judgement.

As you’re leveling all you need to worry about is Power and Critical really. Just trash everything you come against. One you hit 70 you’ll want to prioritize your defense and hitpoints so you can start tanking epic dungeons. My recommendation is Defense, Hitpoints, Critical, Power, Recovery. Armor pen you only need about 5k to get you to your 60% damage resistance ignored.

You’d replace Trample the Fallen Class feature with steel defense. I’d still keep points in Fight on and Crushing Pin in Tactician tree and go conqueror for the rest. You wouldn’t use Cleave but Weapon master strike instead. Since you’re not using cleave you also dont want cruel cut style feats. For the most part though it would stay the same. Get 80% DR, maximize your crit, then power. However Recovery and Action Point gain are more important now to proc your daily thus steel defense more often. Consider a snail for your mount bonus.

Artificing and Weaponsmithing are both important for getting your relic weapons right now, Leadership is good for getting thaum stones and other items. But ultimately it doesnt really impact your gameplay much. Eventually you’ll want to try and get everything to 25.

I was wondering if I can use a owl bear cub for the time being. My crit is really low but i do have a transcendent vorpal and my def is 15k. I’m at 2.4k right now and just got the orcus set.

    • Profile photo of Roy
      February 6, 2017 at 8:51 pm

Of course you can use your owlbear, though it’s benefit may be limited for you. 1, since you have a vorpal you’ll be focusing on increasing your crit chance to take advantage of that as much as possible. Second several of your encounters don’t deal damage. For instance, if you were running Knights Valor, Into the Fray and Enforced Threat while tanking, only enforced threat can proc your owlbear. So yes it will do, but it’s not ideal

  • February 7, 2017 at 8:37 pm

Hey Roy. I play a Dps tank gf as well. I stopped playing to go on a long term trip out west right after I finished the underdark and maze engine. I’ve just started back playing and have been hearing about the new weapon set. Artifacts or something and then another new set coming after that too that everyone is waiting to see if it’s good or not. Do you use this new set instead of twisted or will you and why or why not?

I’m a swordmaster and will probably respect to your build. I use rank 12 azures for defense slots and brutals though for offense. Thoughts? I’ve got an axebeak legacy for armor pen also. I use twisted set and demegorgons. My other artifacts are wheel of elements and gf sigil. My other mounts are a Beattle, giant crab, and 2 slot horses. My item score is around 3k plus with major Ap gain and def kits. 20k power 14kdef 6karmor pen around 35 percent Dmg resist when sitting still. I also use a trans terror for weapon enchant and a negation. What are your thoughts?

My build is based off of Solaris the underdog. He has a video on utube. Focuses mainly on fray, anvil, knights challenge for actives. Crushing surge and sheiks bash and then passive for dps.

    • Profile photo of Roy
      February 10, 2017 at 4:07 pm

Hey man, love the rank 12 azures in the defense and I wish I could afford brutals myself, nice set up. I also like your Axe Beak. The base stats on the wheel aren’t great but that damage buff will treat you nice. I personally don’t use a negation because my base damage resist is already 80% but your defense is lower so I think it’s worth keeping. The Terror enchant is great for pvp and debuffing. But for damage I’d try for a vorpal first. I do have the new artifact weapons they are currently epic (purple) still running mSVA to get the marks needed to upgrade to Legendary. Their base stats are so much better than twisted their really isnt much question on which is better in my opinion. As for the Mod11 sets, the Fortified or Firesoul set looks good. Increases defense by 5% then gives 10% of your defense to your power. Seems pretty good to me.

Awesome build! I’ve been using it for about a month and I’ve been flying thru dailies easy, also in skirmishes I’m the top dmg dealer while also doing my role as the tank. One question, it seems like no one like frontline surge but I have been using it with enforced threat and as you know it is a control power. I pop off enforced threat after I got the mobs and do some great damage as an Aoe!! Obv. I’ll switch it out with knee breaker for the single target bosses,of course.

Well the artifacts aren’t the best unles you have the associated set. Do you have the orcus neck and belt, if not drop the orcus shard. The Lostmauth is only good on it’s own if you need the armor pen. The set up I have is a good Hybrid of Power and Defense. It’s up to you if you want more offensive or defensive stats. For your companions you can use the fire archon as your active, drop the con artist. Fire Archon, Air Archon, Belial, Hunt Rider and Siege Master would be an awesome dps set up.

Hi Roy, awesome build I created a tank about 2 weeks ago followed your build and levelled to 70 in just over a day (I do have max guild xp boon and rank 10s / 11s and 12 azure’s though) – levelling was easy and even at il 2845 I can tank orcus without too much problem the majority of the time.

For those struggling on boss fights I’d like to give a bit of advice that I kind of stumbled on – use iron warrior encounter and use it every 3rd or 4th attack from orcus as it boosts your stamina and allows you to have shield up permanently – basically I go from a guarding stance to normal hit frey then guard again then once he hits normal stance and hit commanders strike back to guarding wait for hit then normal stance hit iron warrior back to guarding rinse and repeat – depending on whether I need stamina or not most times I can get 2 commanders in before needing iron warrior which helps beat down the boss.

I have the lostmauth set but change to lathanders and con belt for tanking.

Anyway thanks again mate thoroughly enjoying my tank, so much so my 3400 HR is pretty much shelved atm lol and that’s a beast for DPS 🙂

    Hi Roy,

Thanks for the guide! I’m new to the game and will be following this to get me through to 70. My only question is what powers to take. I’m a tad daunted by all the choices and where to put them. I saw further up in the thread that you were going to post the screens of your power selections but don’t see them. Is there any chance you can post those?

    Thanks!

The screens are up there, but it doesn’t really help you much since I have so many extra points. To level with just just use Cleave and Crushing Surge for your at Wills, Fighters Recovery and Villains Menace for your dailys and Lunging Strike, Enforce threat and Griffons Wrath/Knee Breaker for your encounters. Throw on Combat Superiority and Trample the Fallen for your Class Features.

Hi Roy i have a question about tanking, so i try to tank something and my stamina goes down so fast and i don’t have much recoevery like you have do you have any ideas on how i can tank mobs and bosses in dungeons and refill stamina ?

    • Mark
      February 27, 2017 at 1:06 pm

Use iron warrior or enforced threat both give stamina gain – you will need to come out of guard to activate the encounter – also use shield slam when guarding as this also increases stamina gain.

I’m sure Roy will be along to answer if any of this is not the best way.

  • February 27, 2017 at 5:21 pm

Hey Ron, what is your thought about Iron Warrior? I used your build as a reference, and like every GF who commented is a blast. At least you can do damage… Can’t imagine how painful it was levelling to 70 with the tree of the protector… Anyhow I wanted your input about that encounter since it’s generating 200% threat and more? Did you play around with it a little?

Cheers for showing us the way =)

      March 2, 2017 at 4:40 pm

Iron Warrior is an interesting ability, the temporary hit points are virtually useless unfortunately. The main draw is the threat generation and the stam regen. While I don’t feel I have any threat issues or stamina issues to warrant using the ability, if someone is having problems this is a good ability to plug in. I’d run it in conjunction with Enforced threat and Into the Fray.

    Hey Roy.

Back again. Been using the build and it’s nice. Never used iron vanguard so it’s been fun changing things up from swordmaster. I had a question though. Is cleave really better to use as the active attack? I have cruel cut and the Orcus set and the artifact bonus too. Just was looking at crushing surge and it’s dang is 8.3k to 10.1k on my powers screen and then my cleave is only 4.3 to 5.2k dmg. Is the difference made up? I keep both slotted and just alternate when I need the healing in battle from surge. Is this the right way to do it? I’ve noticed too that surge seems to take bigger chunks of msg off enemies than my cleave even with the bonuses. Just curious. What are your thoughts? I use villains also for mobs and then go to Indominable strength for bosses use and always keep fighter recovery in for emergency healing.

So far now I’m doing good but looking to push farther. I have problems tanking orcus and that’s it. I’m ok with a good D.C. And the balls around me but I can’t last too long if I mess up at all with sheild and using fighters recovery. Any tips?

I’m looking to fix any gaps I can with fear to improve. I’ve got the same build as you as far as boons powers etc. except I’m half elf and need to change to human and get my stats changed. Here is what I have so far. 21 STR 25 CON 17DEX 13INT 15WIS 14CHA. Power is 23.7 crit is 7.1 AP is 5.6 recovery 1.7 AC gain 550 combat advantage 50 control bonus is 254 defense is 21.7 deflect is 2.7 regen is 228 life steal is 800stamina gain is 780 incoming healing is 250 control resist is 0 movement 547 companion influence 175. Crit chance is 26 percent. 83 percent severity. 58 percent resist ignored. Recharge speed 11.6 AC gain plus 26 percent. Dmg resist is 65.3 percent. Deflect chance is 14.2 percent deflect severity 50 percent. Stamina regen 18.3 percent.

I use elm drag flight raid set. Major def kits in them all. Rank 12 brutals all but 1 slot and it’s a rank 9. Def slots I use tank 12 azures all but 1 and it’s a 10. I use twisted set purple. I use the artifact powers for boosting cleave on main hand and combat superiority for threat gen on offhand. I use defenders gemmed elm chainmail shirt and pants. Ring of brut plus 4 and ring of sudden deflect plus 4. Artifacts are orcus set purple wand beck and belt. Wheel of elm lostmouth horn and gf sigil. I use a trans lightning but I’m pending trade sale for the AD to buy a trans vorpal. I’m also going to trade my greater negation once I hit 80 percent dmg resist for shadowclad for deflect.
I have a con artist at purple, young yeti, siege master, air and fire arcon all at blue as actives. I use the con artist for his debuff and have 3 bonding stones. Probably going to buy 3 tank 12 bonding stones once double AD hits. His gear is ring of rising power plus 4 with a rank 7 brutal and 8 azure. Ring of sudden def plus 3 with a rank 8 azure and finally a ring of sudden def plus 1 with a rank 7 azure. Should I put my rank 12s on him instead with rank 12 bondings for better stats overall on my character? Sorry for the long list of details but I needed to let you know where I stand exactly. Ive saved a ton of refinement items and about 7 brilliant diamonds to possibly upgrade artifacts if I need to swap my current ones plus my twisted set once I can get the new ones or wait on the fortified set in mod 11. What would you do? My mount is a legacy axe beak for 4K AP. I use protectors comradery, shepards devotion, berserkers rage, gladiators guile and barbarian revalry for mount bonuses. Any help means a lot man I would really aprreciate it if you could give me lots of details back. Loving the build u got here. Just trying to make the most of it. I’m good but not as good as u so far.

How can I improve and where man?

    Thanks bro,
    Blake

    • March 1, 2017 at 4:47 am

Hi Blake; if you take a deeper look at it, the crushing strike is more axed toward a single target while cleave has an attack range in cone. That means that you will hit more foes with that “lower” dps. After this will be up to you. On a single encounter, the crushing strike will be very handy to keep you up and going while doing some life stealing. Anyway, the animation for both can be cancelled very quickly so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Roy could give us more details, but that’s my experience between the two at-wills.

      • Profile photo of Roy
        March 2, 2017 at 4:37 pm

Yes Crushing surge does more single target damage, and should be your go to ability when tanking the big baddy. Cleave while doing less damage per hit, hits multiple targets in a cone and is better for pulling mobs and building threat on multiple targets at once.

I got 3 rank 12 bondings now on my con artist too and I’m waiting on a bid to go through for a red dragon heart purple instead of using my lostmouth horn. I can hit around 100k power in dungeons with buffs now. I’m also keeping my trans lightning for now. I keep hearing its going to be a hot comadaty after the enchantment updates happen. The prices on them are now about the same as a trans vorpal I’ve seen on Xbox now.

That’s a good call on the Lightning, I’ve picked one up and am eager to test it out. Jealous of our PC counterparts that get the updates before us lol
